Disability Federation of Ireland National Seminar

15th May 2007

Ashling Hotel, Parkgate Street, Dublin 8

It is clear that the role of Chairperson within a community and voluntary organisation is pivotal to the operation of that organisation. It is equally clear that the Chairperson can influence every facet of an organisation, from its ethos to its operational efficiency and can have a profound effect on its governance. Therefore, it has long been recognised that there is a need for focus and attention to the challenges which Chairpersons face.

With the involvement of fourteen member organisations, DFI undertook a project, entitled 'Chairpersons as Effective Leaders', which sought to identify and improve the supports needed to enhance this role.

The project consultant and author of the project report, Stephen Rourke, will present his findings and there will be short presentations from some of the participants who took part in the project. We will:

  • Look at the challenges to Chairpersons that are posed by the changing environment.
  • Discuss some of the training and developmental needs of Chairpersons and Board members.
  • Review actions and activities aimed at providing practical and relevant responses to the challenges arising from this research.

This project has been supported by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
