On 3 November Minister Anne Rabbitte launched the ‘Living My Life’ Demonstration Housing Project in Galway.

DFI members Ability West and Proactive Carers Galway came together with Brothers of Charity Services Ireland West and the HSE to recognise this unique project of co production.

This project will develop a rights-based approach to housing, supporting person-centred supports, community inclusion and enablement.

The proposal sought to secure a multi-annual budget to enable Ability West and BOCSI West to implement a Demonstration Project, which would involve a proactive model of access to housing for persons with an intellectual disability over a five year period (2022-2027). The project aims to deliver 32 places over the five year period, which will be informed through a planning and consultation process that involves the prospective resident and their key stakeholders.

Director of Clinical Service with Ability West, Bryan Gallagher, who was there on the day said, "As a strong advocate for inclusion and equal opportunities, Ability West is proud to express our unwavering support as a partner for the transformative initiative”.

Josephine Moran, parent and member of the ProActive Carers Galway group gave a powerful speech, reflecting the integrity of both the wisdom and experience of parents across Ireland while also articulating eloquently the context of policy within which this project has been launched.

DFI commends the work of member organisations and all stakeholders in this project. We look forward to hearing more about how the practice of co production and co design, key determinants to UN CRPD implementation ensures successful out comes of independent living supported for disabled people and their families.
