Child Poverty and Disability: Submission to the Oireachtas Committee on Children and Equality

Issued on September 22 2025

In this submission, we highlight how children with disabilities, and children living in households with disabled parents, face a far greater risk of poverty and deprivation. Extra costs of disability, barriers to work, and lack of timely access to essential services mean too many families are being pushed into hardship.

DFI is calling on government to ensure that disability is explicitly recognised in all child poverty targets and strategies, and that concrete actions are taken to address the additional costs and challenges disabled households face. With the right policies and supports, child poverty is not inevitable, it can and must be reduced.
