Government buildings local and national, major companies, civic and educational institutions are all turning purple to celebrate the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities this Dec. 3rd.

In year two of the #PurpleLights campaign, the Disability Federation of Ireland, DFI is asking for a purple spotlight on disability and the 643,100 Irish people living with disability.

The Purple Lights founder, disability activist, Gary Kearney says, “Sure we have some huge issues and life is not easy for people with disabilities but it’s a great community and on this one day, let’s celebrate that. Tomorrow we go back to fight the good fight on the numerous issues that affect us, housing, work, health, transport.”

The resilience of not only people with disabilities but also the organisations that support them was highlighted by DFI’s Head of Policy, Dr Joanne McCarthy. “The challenges are enormous. Services are delivered by our members despite a funding shortfall from Government of at least €40 million every year".

Here are four scenarios that address how everyone and everything can turn purple on Dec. 3rd.

  1. Big buildings need only contact their building management who can flick a switch and turn white light purple.

Smaller offices with outside lighting will require a purple filter. These are not expensive (around €20) easy to fit  you can order and get help from Sales@stagelightingcentre.com and Tomás.

  1. Offices without outdoor lighting or photo can be turned purple by simply applying a free filter found here; Instagram has built in colour filters which makes it easier again.
  2. Last but not least, anyone can show support by wearing something purple, like a tie, blouse or socks!

We’re encouraging everyone to acknowledge the participating local authoroties and buildings on social media. Citizens and staff can pose and snap in the purple glow using the campaign hashtags.
