Introducing the Public Participation Network, PPN and the Local Community Development Committee, LCDC
Decisions about your local area are happening every day. Two key structures ensure you can be part of them, if you know how they work.
From funding for a new playground to long-term strategies for climate action or social inclusion, local government is constantly shaping the future of our communities.
In Ireland, there are two structures specifically created to connect community groups with Local Authorities: the Public Participation Network, PPN and the Local Community Development Committee, LCDC.
Our Commubnity Devleopment Manager for the Community Programme, PJ Cleere leads two essential video tutorials to demystify these acronyms and show you exactly how to use them to drive real change.
The Public Participation Network, PPN
Think of the PPN as your network of influence. It is the primary link between the Local Authority and community, voluntary, and environmental groups. If your group isn't part of the PPN, you are missing out on information, funding news, and the chance to elect representatives to key committees.
Watch this video to learn:
- How the PPN structure works.
- The benefits of joining (it’s free and open to all community groups).
- How you can elect representatives to have a direct say in policy.
Local Community Development Committee, LCDC
While the PPN gives you a voice, the LCDC is where that voice often needs to be heard. This committee is responsible for coordinating and overseeing local development and funding (like the SICAP programme). It brings together councillors, state agencies, and, crucially, community representatives from the PPN.
Watch this video to learn:
- What the LCDC actually does (coordinating funding and planning).
- Who sits on the committee.
- How your community group can engage with it to influence high-level decisions.
Take the next step
Understanding the system is the first step toward changing it. By engaging with your PPN and understanding the role of the LCDC, you move from being a spectator to an active participant in your community's future.
