On Wednesday, 3 December 2025, the skyline of Ireland will change. To mark the United Nations International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPwD), public buildings, heritage sites, and community spaces across the country will light up in purple.

This isn't just a light display, it is a message.

The Purple Lights Campaign is a visible declaration of solidarity with the 1 in 5 people in Ireland living with a disability. It is a moment to move beyond awareness and celebrate the contribution, diversity, and resilience of the disability community.

Why Purple?

Founder Gary Kearney explains the spirit behind the colour:

“Purple Lights is a celebration of our lives. Too often we’re pitied or not seen. When we light up the country, we’re marking our own space in the world and embracing our uniqueness.”
