Claiming our future

'Claiming our Future' is a major civic society event planned for 30th October 2010, involving a range of organisations including Is Féidir Linn, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the Environmental Pillar of Social Partnership, the Community Platform, Social Justice Ireland and TASC.

These groups began a series of meetings earlier this year to explore how best to cooperate and coordinate endeavours for a more equal, inclusive and sustainable Ireland. From this Claiming Our Future evolved to include many different organisations which include trade unions, environmental groups, community groups, migrant worker organisations, youth groups, older people’s organisations, cultural groups, student groups, developing world groups, rural networks, women’s organisations, disability groups, social media and social justice organisations.

This event is being held in the Industries Hall of the RDS in Dublin begining at 9am on 30th October 2010.

'Claiming our Future' is an event to stimulate the emergence of a cross sectoral community of interest and action for a more equal, inclusive and sustainable Ireland. They are organising this event because they are deeply dissatisfied with the direction of Government policy in response to the economic recession. They do not accept that there is no alternative to make in identifying and progressing new policy choices.

From initial discussion earlier this year, a wider range of civil society organisations have begun to meet to organise this event.

Their aim is to have a thousand people at the event drawn from all parts of civil society and from all corners of Ireland. The event is planned to provide a opportunity to discuss and deliberate on:

  • The values that attendees share and espouse
  • The implications of these values for new policy choices
  • New ways of cooperating and coordinating across civil society to advance these values and policy choices

Help build up awareness of the event by circulating it as widely as possible. Please see the attachment for more details on the event.
