Open Call: Audition for Audio Description Training 2026

Arts & Disability Ireland, The Lir Academy, National Academy of Dramatic Art, and Mind’s Eye Audio Description are inviting applications for an upcoming Audio Description Training Course taking place in Dublin in Spring 2026.

This specialised training will equip participants with the skills to work as freelance audio describers in theatre, with transferable techniques for film, television and the visual arts. The course combines both in-person sessions in Dublin and online learning.

What the Course Covers

Participants will learn:

  • Visual impairment awareness and guiding
  • The scripting and delivery of audio description
  • How to lead a touch tour
  • Language development and vocal skills
  • Operation of audio description equipment

The course will be led by award-winning Audio Describer and accredited trainer Anne Hornsby, founder of Mind’s Eye, a leading provider of audio description services across the UK and Ireland.

Who Should Apply

We are keen to hear from applicants who:

  • Have a clear and pleasant speaking voice

  • Demonstrate an excellent command of English

  • Are committed to theatre and accessibility

  • Work well in a team and accept feedback

  • Have strong observation and organisational skills

Application Process

The selection process includes two stages:

Stage 1:
Submit your CV and a short paragraph (50 words) on why you would make a good audio describer to jenny@adiarts.ie by 18.00 on Friday 10 November.

Stage 2:
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an Information and Audition Day at The Lir Academy, Dublin, on Tuesday 25 November (11.30–15.30).
Eight successful candidates will be chosen to take part in the full training course.

Course Dates

  • Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 January | 10am to  5pm | In person at The Lir Academy

  • Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 January | 10am to 2pm | Online

  • Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 February | 10am to 2pm | Online

  • Monday 16 February | 10am to 2pm | Online

  • Final in-person assessment date to be confirmed (subject to show availability)

Participants will be assessed on an audio description of a live theatre performance, with preparatory homework and script development required.

Course Fee

€300, which includes lunch on the first and last day, tea and coffee during sessions, and theatre tickets.
Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs.
