A purple salute to Irish people with disabilities this Dec. 3rd International Day of Persons with Disabilities

November 28 2018, 12:32pm

This Monday Dec. 3rd, landmark buildings will be flooded in purple lights in a salute to 643,131 people in Ireland, who live with a disability.

The Disability Federation of Ireland have a three-step plan to get anyone and everyone involved.

1. Take a photo of yourself/building in the purple haze in.

2. Post images and videos to social media using the hashtags #IDPwD #PurpleLights as well as mentioning the organisations housed inside.

3. From anywhere, anyone can take a photo and use filters on their smart phone to go purple and show their support. We will have post some advice on how to do this on social media.

So far Irish Rail are lighting up Heuston and Connolly Stations.

Trinity College and Bank of Ireland will face-off across College Green.

Dublin Bus, 59 O’ Connell Street and looking down on them all….Liberty Hall.

Inside Liberty Hall, the serious matter of employment for people with disabilities will be addressed by Inclusion Ireland at an event called “Make Employment Work”, which is sponsored by SIPTU.

The beautiful Department of Education on Marloborough Street will be purple as will that northside icon, the Casino at Marino.

The National Concert Hall and the National Convention Centre finished finished off the Dublin buildings involved at this point.

Outside of Dublin the tourism hot spot of Killarney will bathe Irish and international people with disabilities in purple light. The iconic Rock of Cashel will be a blaze of lilac light highlighting the fact that Cashel is a Gold Star town for accessibility. Kilkenny Castle will join the purple haze.

Everyone can get involved by turning any sort of photo purple with this free online filter. https://www241.lunapic.com/editor/?action=twotone

The man behind the 50 shades of purple, is disability activist and radio host, Gary Kearney who said, “Sure, it’s a gesture but gestures matter”.

So get behind Irish people with disabilities this Dec. 3rd. Acknowledge the participating organisations and buildings on social media or use the photo filters on your phone to turn your own home or image purple.
